History

The land for Rooster Rock State Park was acquired from private owners between 1937 and 1985 to ensure public access to the Columbia River and preserve the Gorge’s natural beauty. The park’s development was delayed until the 1950s when a new highway was constructed along the river. Rooster Rock, located at the park’s western end, is believed to be the landmark noted by Lewis and Clark as their campsite on November 2, 1805.
